Bharti Airtel rejigs operations for India and South Asia

India's top telecom firm Bharti Airtel is streamlining its operations in India and South Asia under two verticals to boost efficiency. The world's fifth largest telecom company, grappling with falling profits and slowing growth, will now operate under two customer business units — one serving corporate clients (business to business or B2B) and the other handling its retail offerings (business to customer or B2C) — effective August 1, the company said in a statement.
"The new structure is aimed at driving greater business and functional synergies, providing a common interface to customers, and creating a de-layered and more agile organization," chairman and managing director Sunil Mittal said.

Bharti Airtel operates in 19 countries across Asia and Africa. Before the restructuring, Airtel had four business divisions — mobile, satellite TV (DTH), fixed-line broadband telemedia and enterprise. Mobile, DTH and fixed-line broadband telemedia businesses together account for about 90% of the company's revenues.
Under the new plan, B2C — which includes mobile, telemedia, digital television, mobile commerce and mobile advertising — will be split into consumer business and market operations. Four senior company executives have been assigned new roles to help cut costs and increase efficiency. KSrinivas, who was head of telemedia, takes charge as president of consumer business.
Market operations in India and South Asia will be divided into three regions, each headed by an operations director. While Ajai Puri will head operations in northern and eastern India and Bangladesh, south India and Sri Lanka operations will be led by Vineet Taneja. Raghunath Mandava takes charge of western India along with the national distribution portfolio.
The B2B unit will continue under Drew Kelton and will focus on corporates and small- and medium-businesses, besides the company's undersea cable offerings. Srinivas, Puri, Mandava, and Kelton will report to Sanjay Kapoor, chief operating officer for India and South Asia.
Atul Bindal, head of mobility for two years, will be assigned a new role in the group. Bharti, which has dominated India's mobile sector for much of the last decade, has been struggling of late to maintain its performance.
