TRAI warns telcos against increasing call rates

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman J S Sarma on 7th September, 2011 warned the mobile operators against increasing rates at will. He said that the regulator would have to "intervene" to protect the interest of consumers.
Sarma's warning came a day after Sunil Mittal, chairman of the country's largest telecom company, Bharti Airtel, said a further increase in rates was inevitable as costs were rising.

Bharti Airtel has raised rates by over 20 per cent since July across most key circles. Other telecom operators also followed the suit. Trai has asked operators to give details justifying the increase in rates.
