BSNL's 2G expansion doubtful in East India due to uncertain gear supplies from ZTE

Expansion of 2G network for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd in Eastern India is in trouble due to doubts whether ZTE would be able to fulfill gear supply commitments or not. The BSNL needs over Rs 1,300-crore worth of GSM equipment in nine eastern zones.
The Chinese company ZTE bagged gear supplies contract by defeating Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson to get the huge deal from the state run BSNL. None of other companies agreed to go into the price range of ZTE, hence the deal went to the Chinese company.

"BSNL's GSM network expansion across the east and northeast is stuck since ZTE has not confirmed whether it will handle equipment supplies in the region," was the statement of an executive in Economic times. They also suggested the company may also need to go for an unscheduled tender.
If there are no ZTE supplies for the GSM gears in the eastern circles, the BSNL contract size will reduce to Rs 2,700 crore. The original worth of the contract is Rs 4000 crore. The company officials have negated the suggestion the delay is for an increased price. Instead they said they were awaiting clearance from the China headquarters.
