Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to release spectrum in 1,800-MHz band

In the new auction of 2G spectrum, the department of telecommunications (DoT) would be releasing more spectrum for all the new entrants so they can get at least 5 Mhz spectrum.
The spectrum would be released in the 1,800 Mhz band, would now be released. The DoT secretary R Chandrasekhar said the 2G spectrum in the 1,800 Mhz band would be needed for refarming in 2015. At that time, the defence ministry would be expected to vacate the spectrum held by it. Overall, defence would be vacating 55 mhz of spectrum to DoT.
At the same time, there is still a risk some of the entrants would not be getting 5 Mhz spectrum in Delhi and Mumbai if any incumbent gets 1.25 Mhz in the two metros. The reason why the 900 Mhz band spectrum is being freed up are: when the auction ends, all the three top-ups might not be required and the rest of the balance spectrum can still be kept for refarming.
