IBC 2012: Incubation period ends for Liberty Global

The demand for European cable giant Liberty Global/UPC’s new Horizon gateway has already touched a peak, says company CTO Balan Nair. The Liberty Global product was launched at the IBC trade show in Amsterdam. With this launch of Horizon gateway from the company, the incubation period for it has ended.
The devices are being managed with the help of the Snowflake user interface, it is developed by UK software specialists NDS (now part of Cisco). They enable content and services delivery to various devices in and out of the home, with a unified look and feel.

The gateways from the company are powered by Intel Atom. They will initially be introduced in Netherlands initially, and later they will be rolled out in Switzerland, Germany and Ireland within the next half year. The company chief technology officer Mr. Nair said that the company had whether the new devices were acceptable to the consumers or not with a few friendly customers, but the devices have already been sold out in the markets. The company had expected the same number of devices would be sold over the next three weeks.
“We are delighted to be announcing the launch of the Horizon platform,” said Mr. Nair. “Over the course of this project we have worked with some outstanding partners to achieve an industry first, and through the provision of the key technologies and solutions for Horizon, NDS have been instrumental in enabling us to provide such an exceptional user experience for our subscribers.”
