The telecom operators who flout MNP norms to pay fine

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has said the telecom operators will have to pay a penalty ranging of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 if they flout mobile number portability (MNP).
In the mobile number portability norms, the users are able to switch operators but they are able to use the same numbers. The mobile number portability facility was launched last January itself. There have been complaints from the telecom subscribers who say their MNP requests are rejected by the telecom companies.

"In order to ensure compliance of MNP regulations by access providers, the authority has decided to amend the regulations to incorporate the provisions for levying financial disincentives where contravention is established," the regulator said in its fourth amendment to the Telecommunications Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009.
