There would be no relaxation in the digitization deadline: Govt

The government has told the local cable operators that there are no chances of any relaxation in the digitization deadline for the four metros. So any further shift in the digitization deadline has been completely ruled out.
In the digitization deadline, the local cable operators would have to shut off the analogue and would have to switch to digital access systems (DAS) by 1 November 2012.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry Joint Secretary (Broadcasting) Supriya Sahu also told the LCOs, the issues had still to be sorted out with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Sahu said that sufficient number of digital set top boxes in the metros would soon be seeded since suitable arrangements have been made. He further said there there was no reason for the LCOs to protest the deadline.
According to her, the registration related problems could be sorted in the local post offices and shouldn’t be brought to I & B Ministry. The LCOs had complained that registration was being given for only up to one year. There was no guarantee for any extension in the same. It was also clarified in a meeting with the TRAI chairman Dr Khuller, that there would be no change in the Rs 45 share for the local cable operators in the subscriber fee. The share was cleared by the parliament itself.
