CA Media picks up minority stake in Graphic India

After picking up 49 per cent stake in television production house Endemol India, CA Media, the Asian investment arm of The Chernin Group, has now acquired a “large minority” stake in comic book and animation company Graphic India.
The company, however, did not disclose the financial details.
Graphic India, which is run by the entrepreneur trio Sharad Devarajan, Gotham Chopra and Suresh Seetharaman, will focus on creating superhero and mythological characters for the Indian youth market published across mobile and online platforms. It is a subsidiary of the US-based Liquid Comics.
Rajesh Kamath, CEO, CA Media India, said, “We are focused on investing in traditional media, digital media as well as consumer retail formats. This is our first investment in the digital space and we believe India is evolved as a market for character-led entertainment content that will be seamlessly available from digital screens to films and television content.” He said CA Media’s aim is to create an ecosystem of diversified assets across media, where each asset will not only unlock its own value but have a multiplier effect on the portfolio. He also said the firm was looking to identify opportunities to invest in consumer entertainment space, which includes multiplexes, family entertainment centres and e-tailing.
Sharad Deverajan, co-founder and CEO, Graphic India, said, “We believe the next generation of characters and superheroes will emerge from India. We intend to find and promote a new generation of creators. Through animated shorts, digital comics and other media content we will launch mythological and superhero characters and storylines targeted at the youth.”
CA Media is focused on investment and acquisitions to build a regional footprint for the Chernin Group in India, Indonesia and China.
