Budget 2013: FICCI demands infrastructure status for cable sector

In order to garner domestic funding for the sector, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in its pre-budget 2013 memorandum has asked for infrastructure status to be given to the cable sector.
Apart from this, FICCI has also said that the license fee for DTH services should be reduced to 6% from the current 10%. "Presently, a license fee of 10% of the gross revenue collected by the DTH service provider is levied on the DTH industry. It is recommended that the license fee for DTH services be reduced from present 10% to 6%. Since the DTH industry is a capital intensive industry, this relief would help the industry in a long way," said FICCI.

FICCI has recommended that DTH services be included in the 'negative list' of service tax. "Cable TV and DTH service is essentially the transmission of programme which is taxed as services by central government and the same transmission of programme, is also considered as 'entertainment' services by the state governments is also being taxed as a local service tax under a different nomenclature i.e. entertainment tax," said FICCI.
Therefore, FICCI has recommended that the DTH services be included in the negative list of service tax. FICCI also sought a customs duty waiver for film production equipment.
