Digitised Cable TV Services Launched In Tamil Nadu

Describing it as freedom from the shackles of a few private multi system operators (MSO), the newly formed cable TV operators’ forum on 14 February floated its own MSO-TCCL (Tamil Nadu Cable Communication Limited). It also officially launched its set top based digitised cable TV services in the city.
According to P. Sakilan, MD, TCCL told DC that almost 90 per cent of the city operators have come under TCCL fold and sounded hopeful of their digitised STBs reaching entire city by May.

“Around 600 city cable operators have joined hands with us, while several others have promised to join us,” said P. Sakilan. Majority of city operators were with the KAL cables (SCV), but, a major section of operators, over 500, have now come under TCCL’s fold, Sakilan said. Ten other private players including Jak communication and Adhar vision have obtained DAS licence in Chennai.
“We have now two lakh STBs which will go up to 5 lakh by March and to 7.5 lakh by April and are hoping to cover entire city by May for which 30 lakh STBs will be required,” said Sakilan and claimed that their ‘hybrid STBs’ with several exciting features would redefine the cable services in the state.
Cable operators in the state were fed up of the monopolized operation of the industry in the hands of Sumangali Cable of Sun Group and political was on media control between DMK and AIDMK the two main political parties ruling the state in alternate terms. With the Union government delaying DAS licence for the state owned Arasu Cable TV for launching MSO services, TN Cable Operators Welfare Association (TCOA), headed by Sakilan that claims to have 30,000 members in its fold in the state, had obtained an MSO to cater to their existing customers.
Tamil Nadu State to license enumerate cable TV subscribers
In a bid to prevent revenue leakage by the dodging local cable operators who give false details of number of customers under their control, the state government has decided to have the database of all cable TV users in the state, barring Chennai, and has started enumeration of subscribers. Ration card holders in the state have been asked to fill a form provided by TN Arasu Cable TV (TACTV) while purchasing their entitlements at PDS shops so that the creation of database will become easy for authorities.
Enumeration of subscribers will be done regardless of the MSOs they have obtained connections from but LCO names will be mentioned.
“There is also a provision to inform about the quality of the services,” said the official and added that over 50 per cent of work had been completed.
The forms will be handed over to the tahsildars who will compile the details and send it to the corporation. The official pointed exercise was initiated after observing that a few LCOs tend to dodge while giving the number of subscribers that had obtained connections from them.
