DoT orders blocking of Web pages related to IIPM

The Department of Telecom has ordered Internet Service Providers to block access to more than 70 Web pages that have content related to the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). The order was issued on February 14.
The blocked Web pages include that of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which states that IIPM is not a university and “does not have the right of conferring or granting degrees as specified by UGC.” Web pages of media publications including Indian Express and Outlook were also on the blocked list with 73 Web pages.

IIPM had earlier sued some of these media publications for “publishing, distributing, giving coverage, circulating, blogging the defamatory, libellous and slanderous articles.”
This comes even as netizens have been criticising the Government for being too tough on online content. Recently, a high-powered committee, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, gave a clean chit to the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeITy) for blocking 310 Web pages in August.
These pages were ordered to be blocked to clamp down on rumours that fuelled panic among the North-Eastern community, leading to large scale exodus from Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad.
