TRAI releases recommendations on ‘IMT – Advanced Mobile Wireless Broadband Services’

TRAI has issued its recommendations on the “IMT, an Advanced Mobile Wireless Broadband Services”.
To facilitate the deployment of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), TRAI suo motu issued a Consultation paper on ‘IMT’ on 19th August 2011 for the comments of the stakeholders. The consultation paper raised a number of regulatory and technical issues in the implementation of IMT-Advanced technologies in the country. Some of these issues, which were mainly regulatory in nature, got covered in the recommendation on ‘Auction of Spectrum’ dated 23rd April, 2012.

In these recommendations, TRAI has considered the issue of Duplexing Scheme and Band plan of 700 MHz (698-806 MHz) and has recommended that India should adopt APT700 band plan for the 700 MHz spectrum band (698-806 MHz) with FDD based 2x45 MHz frequency arrangement. As the eco system for IMT technology is still evolving, the Authority is of the opinion that only after the roll out of services using IMT – Advanced technologies, remaining issues, which are technical in nature viz. Quality of Service, Impact of Femto Cell etc., can be better addressed.
