BIS standards to be mandatory for STBs from July 3rd

IT products including STBs in India will carry Indian Standard (IS) certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) with effect from July 3, 2013. India is also planning to ban all electronic products from India that do not carry BIS mark.
The Indian Government has informed that it will not make any relaxation in this rule. 15 categories of products will fall under the registration process started by the Government. Therefore, these products need to be registered under BIS.

According to J. V. Ramamurthy, President, MAIT, “More than 1,400 products have been given for getting BIS certification. However, we received only one product with this certification. The Government has assigned only 9 labs to do the tests. The labs must have thorough knowledge regarding the parameters of test and how to test. But the labs do not have clear awareness about these things.”
These categories of products include tablets, laptops, plasma/LCD/LED televisions, set-top boxes, optical disc players, microwave ovens, video games, printers, scanners, etc. The deadline for certification was extended to July 3 from April 3. Every product manufactured after July 3 or which comes to a port after that date must carry the certification details.
