Govt. says only 9,500 cable TV connections in Puducherry

Admitting that the data available with the government on the number of cable TV connections in Puducherry was wrong, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on 19 July said that step would be taken to arrive at the correct number. Intervening in the debate over the question raised by Omsakthi Sekar (AIADMK) in the Puducherry Assembly on collection of long pending arrears of entertainment tax from the cable TV operators, the Chief Minister said that he agreed with the contention of members that there was a difference between the numbers of cable TV connections in the government books and actual numbers.
A special drive would be launched to collect the arrears from cable operators as well as to list out the latest figures, he assured the House.
Earlier, N.G. Panneer Selvam, Minister for Local Administration, said that there were around 9,500 cable TV connections in Puducherry and that entertainment tax to the tune of Rs. 3.49 crore was to be collected from the cable TV operators.
Raising strong objection to the Minister’s claim, Mr. Sekar and Anbazhagan (AIADMK) said the figure was shown extremely low with the connivance of officials, rulers, multi system operators (MSOs) and cable TV operators.
The government had distributed ration cards to more than 1.5 lakh families.
When almost all of them had televisions and cable connections, how could the government claim that there were only 9,500 cable TV connections, the members asked.
Charging that a DMK leader was controlling the entire cable television business in Puducherry, Mr. Anbazhagan said entertainment tax could be among the top revenue sources of the government.
As most of the local channels were airing news without mandatory permission, he demanded strict regulations in place.
