MAA TV moots 14+2 ad cap formula for regional broadcasters

MAA TV COO J Sekhar has demanded that the regional language channels must be given some leeway by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on ad cap regulation as compared to their national counterparts.
TRAI must allow regional channels to have ad duration of 14 minutes plus 2 minutes of self promotion in a clock hour as opposed to the current 10+2 formula.

The ad regulation in its current form will sound death knell for many regional broadcasters as they operate in an extremely fragmented market with low ad rates.
With TRAI in no mood to relent, MAA TV recently moved Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) challenging the regulation. The inaugural hearing was on 21 October.
MAA TV’s petition has been posted for hearing on 31 October along with petitions of other broadcasters including Sun TV Network, Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL), Eenadu Television, B4U Broadband, 9X Media, and Sarthak Entertainment.
News Broadcasters Association (NBA), the apex body of television news broadcasters in the country, is the lead petitioner in the case. The news broadcasters had got an interim relief from TDSAT on 30 August which directed the TRAI against taking any coercive action till final orders.
