Digital network launched for monitoring earthquakes

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services launched a modern digital network project for monitoring earthquakes and seismological research across the country.

The project, Indian Seismic and GNSS Network, undertaken by the Earth System Sciences Organisation of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is a permanent digital network connecting all standalone and institutional seismic and global positioning system stations sprinkled all over the country on real-time basis.

So far, these stations were functioning independently, some of them as independent research units. Data fr0m these stations will be pooled at the network project centre at INCOIS and disseminated on real-time basis.

Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, who launched the project, said in the first phase 90 seismic and GPS stations across the country were connected to the network.

While data fr0m selected stations is made available openly to all users, data fr0m other stations is shared as per the data sharing policy. Users can request seismic or GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data for a chosen time period. is audible up to one km radius.
