New Gen Media's English news channel plans hang in balance; journalists left in a lurch

Chennai-based New Gen Media Corporation Group’s English news channel plans seem to hit a roadblock.
The group, which also runs Tamil news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai, had been looking for a more pan-national presence with the English news channel had appointed close to 40 employees for the channel in the last 18 months. Now their term with the group hangs in balance as they were told on December 26, 2013 to either accept a 50 per cent cut in salaries or retrenchment with a severance pay of three months’ salary. Meanwhile, some employees have already quit the group.

The employees have now moved the Madras High Court, which has ordered New Gen Media Corporation to take a final decision and inform the employees by January 21, 2014.
