PC, laptop, smartphones growing in importance in a multi-screen world: IMC Study

In the country’s multi-screen environment, a dominant shift is visible in the trend of people’s TV viewing behaviour.
Thus, the average time spent on TV is two hours a day, meaning TV is no longer at the centre of entertainment. These are the observations of a study titled ‘Multi-screen Behaviour: A Study on Emerging Consumer Dynamics’ by IMC and IES Management College & Research Centre. For home and work, the PC or laptop is the preferred screen. For travelling, vacation and leisure, the smartphone is the preferred screen. The smartphone is used most of the time on a daily basis, and is followed by the PC and laptop. For entertainment, communication and information purposes and task-oriented services, the PC-laptop-smartphone is the preferred combination of screens. Time availability is the number one factor followed by location in the selection of multi-screen combination. Nearly every third person surveyed spends two to five hours online on a multi-screen. The smartphone-PC/laptop combination dominates daily life whether one is at home or at work, or on vacation or travelling. Almost 50 per cent of people surveyed enjoy multitasking and thus feel the need for multiple devices being used simultaneously or sequentially. Tweens are more comfortable with the simultaneous usage of the tablet and other devices compared to people in the older age groups. The laptop-smartphone combination is ideal for the youth. In terms of the activities performed during different times using different devices fr0m midnight till 6 am, activities like watching online video, social networking, playing games are being done on the PC or laptop. On the mobile, people check email, look for sports updates and listen to music. Then fr0m 6 am till noon, people use the PC or laptop to shop online, watch online video, watch movies and buy tickets. On the mobile, they start accessing social networks in addition to checking email, listening to music, playing games and getting news updates. Television and tablets only come into the picture at noon. Fr0m noon till 6 pm, people use TV to watch movies and serials, and get sports and trading updates. On the tablet, people play games and also use the device for educational purposes. People at this time use the mobile for social networking and net banking. The PC/laptop continues to be used for things like watching online videos. Finally fr0m 6 pm till midnight, people mainly use TV to watch serials. The tablet continues to be used for playing games and educational purposes. On the mobile, people watch online video, access social networks, play games and get news updates. On the PC/laptop people shop online, watch movies, book tickets and also use it for educational purposes. Tags: IES Management College & Research Centre, IMC, Multi-screen
