CQ- Spanish pay-TV decline intensifies

Spain’s pay-TV remains in free-fall according to the latest report from the Competition Watchdog CNMC. Over the last year, the pay-TV market lost 374,167 subscribers, down 8.8 per cent year-on-year. As of December 31st, pay-TV had 3,774,777 subscribers, down 7 per cent from the previous year with 4,077,101 and somewhat short of its peak of over 4.4 million in 2011.
All pay-TV operators lost subs. Canal Plus, now controlled by Telefónica, ended the year with 1,649,031, down 84,613. Cable Company ONO, recently acquired by Vodafone, lost 82,713 subscribers to 789,895. Telefónica ended the year with 670,525 compared with 707,278 the previous year and pay-DTT channel Gol TV lost 53,000 clients, ending with 237,178.
On average, in Spain there are 8.1 pay TV subscribers per 100 inhabitants with satellite (Canal Plus) as the main choice to access to pay-TV content, with IPTV the platform showing greater growth.
