MediaTek eyes entry-level 4G devices in India

Taiwanese mobile chipmaker MediaTek is hoping to increase its market share in India with a slew of LTE chips to enable entry and mid-level 4G devices, which could fuel wider adoption of the high speed broadband technology in the country.
Finbarr Moynihan, GM,  Corporate Sales International, MediaTek, said, "In the next couple of months, we expect to introduce a whole range of products to target the (4G) LTE segment in India that include entry and mid-range products with different feature sets and price points.”
Moynihan said that more affordable LTE smartphones will certainly help accelerate the adoption of 4G technology in India and in turn would benefit service operators. "India is at an initial stage of embracing LTE."
Lately, US-based mobile chipset giant Qualcomm also revealed its plans to foray into sub-$100 4G devices by the mid of 2015 and added that it was working with Indian vendors to develop reference design.
4G LTE is an advanced technology and is currently available in high-end and premium devices.
Lenovo has recently adopted MediaTek's premium octa-core 4G LTE system on chip (SoC), MT6595 platform to launch Vibe X2, priced at Rs 19,999.
The Taiwanese chipmaker expects mobile device makers to adopt MediaTek's entry-level to high-end LTE chipsets designs to launch smartphones in India during 2015.
MediaTek expects costs of LTE devices to decline in the coming quarters, thanks to increased competition in the LTE chipset market, and the increasing focus by multiple brands to deliver competitive devices.
Historically, emerging economies such as China, India and south-east Asia are the growth drivers for the company which has a market share of close to 30% worldwide.
