Telangana Cable operators want all channels free-to-air

The Telangana State Cable TV Operators Welfare Association has demanded that Multiple System Operators (MSOs) declare all channels free-to-air or offer advertisement-free channels to collect money separately for each pay channel. The association also demanded that all entertainment channels be brought under basic service platform, charging Rs.150 per customer.
Association general secretary S. Jagadishwar Rao said Parliament had passed a bill restricting payment for each pay channel to just Rs.5 but MSOs now charge anywhere between Rs.10 and Rs.40 per channel. “Either they collect money from the advertisers or the customers, but not both,” he said. The MSOs, he said, were bulldozing cable operators, thus creating unhealthy competition and hurting their business.
Instead of providing 300-400 channels as promised when customers were asked to acquire Set Top Boxes (STBs), they are now charging extra money for all the channels. Moreover, MSOs have not set up service centres for these boxes and operators were facing the wrath of customers.
