2G spectrum case hearing commencing on 16 April

The hearing on 2G spectrum scam case, related to Ex—Telecom Minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others including some top corporate executives is likely to commence tomorrow before a special court. On March 24, Special CBI Judge O P Saini, had fixed the hearing for tomorrow.
In its charge sheet filed by CBI on 2 April 2011, had alleged that there was a loss of Rs. 30,984 crore in allocation of 122 licences for 2G spectrum. On 2 February 2012, the Supreme Court of India ruled on a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the 2G spectrum scam and declared that the allotment of spectrum is unconstitutional and arbitrary, hence cancelled the 122 licenses issued in 2008 under A. Raja (Minister of Communications & IT from 2007 to 2009), the primary official accused.

According to the court, Raja "wanted to favour some companies at the cost of the public exchequer" and "virtually gifted away important national assets.
The CBI has examined 154 witnesses in the case while the accused called 29 witnesses in their defence. The recording of evidence in the case involving Raja and 16 others had started on November 11, 2011, after the court had framed charges against the 17 accused named in the first two charge sheets filed by the agency.
Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja’s erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra, three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) —— Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair —— are facing trial in the case.
