India cable & satellite subs 175m by 2019

Last week’s FICCI event in Mumbai heard KPMG’s ‘state of the nation’ report  which forecast that India’s massive cable and satellite sector would see huge benefits from the on-going digitisation of the country.
KPMG said that the country now has 168 million TV households, and that last year saw a 10 million increase in subscribers by some 10 million to 149 million. However, some 10 million of those ‘subscribers’ are viewing free-to-view channels from pubcaster Doordarshan. The net ‘real’ subscribers, says KPMG, is nearer 139 million, representing an 82 per cent penetration rate.
That ‘paid for’ subscriber base is expected to continue to grow, to some 175 million by 2019, and with ARPU growing by an annualised growth rate of 16 per cent which is well ahead of the growth in ad-revenues of some 14 per cent.
