NOFN project cost estimate escalates to Rs 72,778 crore from Rs 20,000 crore

The telecom Ministry reported that National Optical Fibre Network’s committee has estimated an increase in NOFN project to Rs 72,778 crore from Rs 20,000 crore.
The NOFN project, renamed as BharatNet under Digital India, is associated with the connecting 2.5 Lakh Gram Panchayats with broadband network.
The committee has suggested to include urban areas and business users in the coverage which was earlier limited to about 2.5 lakh village panchayats and use mix of various technologies like satellite, spectrum for connectivity rather than only optical fibre.
The committee has also suggested to reduce the broadband speed across all gram panchayats in the country to 20 megabit per second (mbps) from 100 mbps as planned earlier.
The committee expects that the project can be commissioned by December 2017, while the government has set the deadline by December 2016.
