Madras HC reserves its order on plea of Sun TV against ED attachment

On 3rd June, the Madras High Court reserved orders on petitions filed by Kalanidhi Maran-owned Sun TV and Kal Communications challenging the recent attachment of their properties by Enforcement Directorate in connection with its money laundering probe in the Aircel-Maxis deal.
Both the said companies were challenging the attachment of their properties by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Aircel Maxis case.
During the hearing of the case, senior counsel appearing for the petitioner, P.S. Raman asserted that the properties were acquired much before the investigating agencies commenced their probe into the Aircel Maxis case. He also questioned why the properties of other firms accused in the case have not been attached.
Additional Solicitor General, G. Rajagopalan contended that the Supreme Court was monitoring the developments in the case and had also observed that any other court hearing the matter would obstruct the investigation by the CBI and the ED.
On March 31st, Sun TV and Kal Comm Pvt. Ltd moved to Madras HC seeking to quash ED’s order of attachment of properties. But finally Madras HC reserved its order to attach their properties by ED. The Supreme Court has already restricted any court from entertaining petitions in the matter.
