Telecom industry all set to roll out MNP from 3rd July

Allowing an easy shifting between States and circles, the telecom industry is now all set to roll out  nationwide mobile number portability (MNP) for mobile users from July 3rd.
Under the current system, if a person has a mobile number issued in one state, it cannot be transferred to another circle or state. While the numbers might not be large, this has also led to an inflated mobile subscriber base in the country, as a person is forced to get a new number when they relocate.
According to COAI director general, Rajan Mathews, the industry is now ready for the rollout.
Initially it was expected to be implemented by May 3rd. However, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had sought an extension to allow telecom operators to make technical changes to implement the service. The ministry then gave an extension of two months.
