Shashi Kapoor: the legendary actor with a charming face passes away

The actor who mouthed the legendary dialogue written by Salim-Javed, “Mere Paas Ma Hai” is no more. The legendary actor with a charming face, Shashi Kapoor passed away in Mumbai on 4 December, 2017. He was 79.

He was the last surviving son of great actor Late Prithviraj Kapoor. The superstar of the century Amitabh Bachchan who shared a great chemistry with Kapoor onscreen in many films including ‘Deewar’ wrote an emotional note saying that he saw a picture of Kapoor on a film magazine cover just before his Bollywood debut, and looking at the “terribly handsome” man, he thought he stood no chance in the industry.

The two great stars worked together in films like 'KabhiKabhie', 'Trishul' and many more. Kapoor also produced the finest in meaningful alternative cinema, built the iconic Prithvi Theatre and was among India's first crossover stars.

PM Modi mourned his demise and said: “Shashi Kapoor's versatility could be seen in his movies as well as in theatre, which he promoted with great passion. His brilliant acting will be remembered for generations to come.”

Born on March 18, 1938, Shashi started acting at the age of four, acting in plays directed and produced by his father. He made his debut as a leading man in the 1961 film "Dharmputra" and went on to appear in more than 116 films during the '70s and until the mid '80s.

Kapoor produced films such as 'Junoon', 'Kalyug', '36 Chowringee Lane' and 'Utsav', all directly or subliminally rooted in literature. 'Junoon' was based on Ruskin Bond's long story, 'A Flight of Pigeons'. 'Utsav' was a modern celluloid avatar of ancient Indian playwright Sudraka's 'Mrichakatika'. The protagonist of '36 Chowringee Lane' quotes Shakespeare. 'Kalyug' was inspired by the Mahabharat.

He is survived by his daughter Sanjana, and sons Kunal and Karan.

Cable Quest deeply mourns his demise.
