Parliamentary Panel asks MeitY to give push to indigenous STBs to reduce import

At present, most of the MSOs and DTH operators depend on imported STBs (Set-Top-Box). To reduce their dependence on imported STBs, and to push the growth of India made STBs, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has recommended the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) to give a push to indigenous set top boxes.

At present, about 11 crore STBs have already been installed throughout the country out of which only about 20-30% have been procured from the domestic STB manufacturers. The domestic manufacturers claim that they have installed capacity to meet the full demand.

The committee added that the development of indigenous condition access system (CAS) iCAS will boost the adoption of domestically manufactured STBs. The iCAS has also been developed by Bengaluru-based ByDesign in partnership in MeitY. As per the terms of the contract, the design of i-CAS cannot be given to any foreign company for three years. The iCAS has been deployed by 80 multi system operator (MSOs) in 3 lakh STBs. Doordarshan has also selected i-CAS for its MPEG4 STBs for the Freedish service.
