UIDAI to issue temporary 16-digit virtual ID to keep Aadhaar number confidential

Sensitized with increasing misuse of Aadhaar number by local e-verifying units, and a report of the Tribune that Aadhaar data of anyone can be bought for just Rs 500, the Aadhaar issuing authority Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is planning to launch Virtual ID for people which will allow Aadhaar holders to generate a 16-digit temporary number. So they would not need to share their actual Aadhaar number to anyone.

All e-KYC doing agencies such as banks, insurance companies and telecom service providers will need this temporary virtual ID instead of Aadhaar number.

UIDAI said: “It will not be possible to locate an individual’s Aadhaar number by using the Virtual ID.”

According to UIDAI the virtual ID will act as a layer of securityto prevent your Aadhaar from being shared, thus it will also help to address privacy and security concerns.

The Virtual ID will be issued from March, and all service providers will have to upgrade their systems to mandatorily allow for the new tool from June. People can opt to use the Virtual ID as many times as you want, or keep generating a new one every time you have to share your unique ID.

Also, UIDAI added that the added safety feature is limited sharing of information, again aimed at preventing possible misuse and data theft. Instead of the current system where the five details — name, date of birth, photo, address and mobile number — are shared with the service provider at the time of authentication, the new feature will allow only needbased sharing of data. For instance, if you want a new mobile connection, the telco will get only your name, photo and address. For a passport, though, all data may be shared.
