Hotstar content now available on Airtel TV

As reported on 12 February, the country’s leading telecom operator Airtel has finally partnered with Star India’s OTT platform Hotstar. With this partnership, Hotstar’s content will now be available on Airtel TV, the telco’s mobile app.

Sameer Batra, CEO Wynk, Airtel's entertainment subsidiary, said: “We are delighted to have Hotstar on board as a long term partner in our endeavour to build a world-class digital content ecosystem. Their rich content library will add immense value to our content play and add to the user experience."

Ajit Mohan, CEO Hotstar, said: “Airtel has among the widest consumer footprints in India and with our expansive content library, comprising rich programming that can cater across age groups, geographies and interests, there are natural synergies and we are very excited about this partnership."

The deal includes movies, TV shows, and live sports from 22 channels across Star India's network, in nine languages. The shows and other content will be available to Airtel subscribers for free until June 2018, though they will not be able to enjoy Hotstar's English-language content, as well as content offered by HBO, Disney India, and Showtime, and other English-language channels owned by Star family.

Industry analysts say that the move is aimed to contain JioTV, which is offering a stiff competition with its aggressive content.
