Sony to enter regional segment with Marathi Channel

Regional content is gaining momentum and to tap the vast markets, OTT platforms as well as broadcasters are offering content in different local languages. Sony too is going to enter the segment with a Marathi GEC. The Marathi GEC segment is dominated by Zee Marathi, Colors Marathi and Star Pravah.

At present, SPNI is running a Bengali channel Sony Aath, a hybrid channel that offers a mix of fiction, cinema as well as locally produced animation programmes. SPNI bought Aath in 2009.

Ajay Bhalwankar, the chief creative director of Sony Entertainment Television (SET), may lead the Marathi GEC.

Sony spokesperson commented: “Yes, we shall be launching a Marathi channel soon. We shall share details on date of launch and who will be leading this channel, at a later date.”

Two years back, SPNI had got five licences namely SAB Bangla, SAB Punjabi, SAB Marathi, and SAB Telugu. The SAB Bangla was utilised to launch Ten 2 HD channel. The other four licences have still not been operationalised.
