Star India finds BCCI media rights expensive but worth buying

Talking about the massive sum spent on purchasing media rights of BCCI matches for which e-auction ended on April 5, Star India chairman & CEO and 21st Century Fox Asia President Uday Shankar said that though the deal was over expensive but it was worth buying.

Star India successfully retained the media rights for India cricket matches for a whopping Rs 6138.2 crore. Sony Pictures Networks India’s bid stood at Rs 6118.59 crore.

Shankar said: “Cricket has a special value in India we had a number in mind and the tender settled well within the numbers that Star India felt that it could responsibly pay for. Ever since we got into the business of sports broadcasting six years ago our journey started with the BCCI rights. No matter how popular other tournaments might be when the national team puts on the national jersey that is a very special feeling. Our journey started with the BCCI rights and it has been spectacular.”
